The American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE) is administered each January to every general surgery resident in the United States. This exam is an opportunity for residents to demonstrate their mastery of various basic science and clinical management problems. It also serves as a standardized instrument by which department chairpersons and residency directors can evaluate the progress of their trainees and the efficacy of their educational curricula.
As nearly any general surgery resident can attest, the ABSITE also represents a source of great stress. While it is true that this examination is not intended to be the sole assessment of any resident’s progress, great import is often placed on the test results for a variety of reasons. First, ABSITE results are known to be an accurate indicator of an individual’s ability to pass the Qualifying Exam of the American Board of Surgery. Additionally, because many residents plan to seek fellowship training after completion of their formal general surgery training, they recognize that many fellowship directors use ABSITE scores as a device for comparison of residents from different programs. Accordingly, it is only logical that everyone sitting for this exam hopes to score within the highest percentile. Finally, the other certainty to which all general surgery residents can attest is that the rigors of a surgical residency afford little time for preparation for such an important examination.
With this first edition of First Aid for the ABSITE we hope to provide surgical residents with the most useful, high-yield, and up-to-date review of surgical material for their ABSITE preparation. From the outset, every editing and content decision for this book was made with the singular purpose of helping the reader achieve a higher score and excel on the ABSITE.
This new addition to the First Aid series represents a dedicated effort by a number of residents and faculty members in order to create a book that includes
■ A concise, all-in-one review book of highly tested basic science and clinical science components of surgery.
■ A comprehensive preparation book for both the Junior and Senior ABSITE examinations.
■ Hundreds of high-yield key facts, mnemonics, figures, diagrams, and tables to highlight high-yield, highly tested information.
■ Sample questions to reinforce highly tested material, in some cases beyond what is presented in the chapters.
We hope that you find First Aid for the ABSITE a necessary and invaluable adjunct to your ABSITE preparation and surgical curriculum. We invite you to share your thoughts and ideas about the book and to contribute suggestions for the next edition of First Aid for the ABSITE. Good luck on the ABSITE.
